TRIBUNBATAM.id - Smoothies are included in healthy and filling drinks. This mixture of fruit, vegetables, and yogurt or milk is indeed popular lately among lovers of a healthy lifestyle.

However, containing fruits and vegetables does not mean low calorie levels. Even vegetable juices and smoothies can cause obesity if we are not careful.

According to nutritionist, Bonnie Taub-Dix, smoothies can be a healthy breakfast alternative, provided they contain balanced nutrition, including protein, carbohydrates, and healthy fats. 

"Unlike juice, smoothies do not remove fiber from vegetables and fruit, so they can make the stomach more full," said the author of the book "Read It Before You Eat It - Taking You from Label to Table".

Consumption of vegetable smoothies can also be an alternative to consume vitamins and fiber for people who do not like vegetables.

However, according to him, the "healthy" category of smoothies will disappear if we add sugar or fruit juice to it.

"At first, after we consume, we will feel excited because the sugar is high, but after that we will feel hungry," he said. 

To make smoothies more filling and reduce sugar content, dietitians recommend adding 20-30 grams of protein. We can use protein powder.

Also note the liquid we put in as a smoothie mixture. Choosing packaged fruit juice is not recommended because of its high sugar content. Instead, choose low-fat milk or vegetable milk as an alternative. 

To cause satisfaction and fullness, he suggested eating smoothies in a bowl using a spoon instead of drinking it immediately. 

"It would be better to cause a feeling of fullness if we chew and swallow the food rather than drink it," he said. 

Also pay attention to portions. If you want to lose weight, limit consumption of smoothies as snacks under 150 calories and as a food replacement under 350 calories.

Meanwhile, if you just want to maintain your weight, you can eat 500-600 calorie smoothies instead of eating. (*)
