Magnitude 4 Earthquake Shakes Yapen Islands, Papua

An earthquake with a magnitude of 4 shook the Yapen Islands, Papua, Friday (10/1) at 11.16 East Indonesia Time (WIT).

TRIBUNBATAM.id, PAPUA -  An earthquake with a magnitude of 4 shook the Yapen Islands, Papua, Friday (10/1) at 11.16 East Indonesia Time (WIT). 

Data from the Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysics Agency noted that the epicenter of this earthquake was on land. 

The location of the earthquake was at 1.85 South Latitude, 136.13 East Longitude with its center on land or 12 kilometers southwest of the Yapen Islands. 

"The depth of the earthquake was 10 kilometers," said the official account of the Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysics Agency (BMKG).

BMKG also noted that the tremor was felt in the Serui area on a scale of II and III Modified Mercalli Intensity (MMI).

Based on the BMKG's explanation, several people felt the MMI scale II vibrations, light objects that were hung swayed. 

While the MMI scale III vibration felt real in the house.

There has been no official statement from the government regarding casualties or damage caused by the earthquake in the Yapen Islands.
