The right way to protect yourself from the tear gas

Tuesday (9/24/2019), toothpaste cannot be used to prevent the effects of the tear gas. Its application can only cooling the area around the eyes, but instead of risks that entering the eye and causing the adverse effects.

Reporting from the International News Safety Institute website, rather than using the toothpaste, the most appropriate way to protect yourself from the exposure of tear gas is using a gas mask or respirator.

The second best option after the respirator was an escape hood. This is a safety device that can filter the air and is usually used when there is a fire or chemical emission accident.

Conversely, there are some myths that are believed to prevent the effects of the tear gas, but in fact, that are useless, such as applying toothpaste under the eyes.

Here are some of them:

1. Cover the nose and mouth with a cloth soaked in apple vinegar or lemon juice

Acid that present in vinegar or lemon juice is insufficient or even totally doesn't protect from the effects of tear gas

2. Cover the mouth with a wet cloth

Many tear gases are actually crystalline and not gas. This can react with water and become active again so that the tear gas effect actually becomes longer.

3. Cover the nose with a wet cloth coated with charcoal powder

So far, there is no evidence to support the effectiveness of this method. (*)
