Erick Thohir: There's a Big Mafia that Keeps Our Nation Busy about Importing Medical Devices

TRIBUNBATAM.id - Minister of State-Owned Enterprises (BUMN) Erick Thohir assessed that Indonesia has been complacent with imports of raw materials for medicines and medical devices rather than producing them domestically.

Because of this, once an outbreak of a disease such as a coronavirus occurs, Indonesia experiences dependence on other countries that have raw materials for medicines and medical devices.

This was conveyed by the Special Staff of the Minister of BUMN, Arya Sinulingga on Friday (4/17/2020). 

"This is where Mr. Erick Thohir stated that we have been too busy with trading, not trying to build a domestic industry to produce medical devices of our own production," said Arya.

Arya gave an example, currently, Indonesia does not have raw materials for masks. In fact, human resources (HR) in Indonesia have the ability to produce masks. 

Seeing this phenomenon, said Arya, Erick Thohir also assumed that there had been a Mafia that made Indonesia continue to import raw materials for medicines and medical devices. 

In fact, Indonesia is able to produce these goods. 

On that basis, President Joko Widodo ordered Erick to build a pharmaceutical industry in Indonesia. 

Previously, Minister of BUMN, Erick Thohir said, at present, the majority of raw materials for medicines and medical devices circulating in Indonesia are still imported. 

The former boss of the Inter Milan soccer club claimed he was concerned about these conditions. 

According to Erick, the epidemic of the coronavirus in Indonesia must be used as learning to change this bad thing. Thus, the Indonesian people will no longer be dependent on other countries. (*)
