During the Pandemic, Claims for Divorce in Batam City Reached 1,509 Cases

TRIBUNBATAM.id, BATAM -  The Batam City Religious Court (PA), Riau Islands, noted that the divorce rate during the Covid-19 pandemic increased sharply than usual, reaching 1,509 cases.

This number is considered to have increased when compared to the same period in 2019, namely until the end of the first semester, or until August.

"The majority of divorce cases in Batam are triggered by economic problems due to the Covid-19 pandemic, to infidelity," said Head of Public Relations of PA Batam, Barmawi at his office, Thursday (17/9/2020). 

In 2019, applications that entered Batam PA only recorded 809 cases. 

Barmawi said, divorce applications submitted to PA Batam were divided into 15 categories.

However, what stands out are the legal divorce, divorce, joint property cases, and polygamy cases. 

"For the problem of infidelity, the majority is proposed by young couples, because Batam City is known to have a very heterogeneous population compared to other areas in Riau Islands," said Barmawi. 

For cases that stand out such as cases for legal divorce, the number has reached 1,036 cases filed by the wife on the grounds of economic problems.

Meanwhile, the divorce cases in the divorce category filed by the husband totaled 390 cases. 

"This number is fairly the same as the number of cases in 2019. Meanwhile, the settlement of divorce cases in PA Batam reached 1,315 cases that have been decided in court, "said Barmawi. (*)
