TRIBUNBATAM.id, SULAWESI - A tectonic earthquake with a magnitude of 5.3 shook the Sulawesi Sea this afternoon, at 14.35 WIB, Tuesday, (6/29/2021).

Based on the analysis of the Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysics Department (BMKG), information on the strength of this earthquake has been updated to a magnitude of 5.2.

Head of the BMKG Earthquake and Tsunami Center, Bambang Setiyo Prayitno MSi said the earthquake's epicenter was located at coordinates 3.89° North Latitude; 125.90° East Longitude.

The location of the earthquake was at sea at a distance of 55 km to the northeast of Tahuna City, Sangihe Islands Regency, North Sulawesi at a depth of 143 kilometers.

Bambang explained that by looking at the location of the epicenter and the depth of the hypocenter, the earthquake that occurred was an intermediate type of earthquake due to the subduction activity of the Sangihe plate.

"The results of the analysis of the source mechanism show that this earthquake has an oblique thrust fault mechanism," he said.

Even though the location of this earthquake is at sea, the BMKG modeling results do not show the potential for a tsunami

However, based on the shakemap, the impact of this earthquake was felt by people in the Bitung area with an intensity scale of III MMI, where tremors were felt at home.

"Until now, there have been no reports of the impact of damage caused by the earthquake," he said.

Meanwhile, based on the results of BMKG monitoring up to 14.50 WIB, Tuesday (6/29/2021) there no aftershock activity. (*)
