TRIBUNBATAM.id - The Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysics Department (BMKG) reported the latest earthquake, shaking the Mentawai region at 5.48 WIB with a magnitude of 6.0.
Based on the results of the Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysics Department (BMKG) analysis, this earthquake update parameter was then updated to M 5.9.
Head of the BMKG Earthquake and Tsunami Center, Bambang Setiyo Prayitno MSi said the earthquake's epicenter was located at coordinates 3.23° South Latitude; 100.11° East Longitude.
The exact location is in the sea at a distance of 135 kilometers southwest of Mukomuko City, Bengkulu at a depth of 21 kilometers.
Even though it is located at sea, the BMKG modeling results do not indicate a potential tsunami.
However, the results of BMKG monitoring until 06.30 WIB, Tuesday, (8/3/2021) showed that there were 2 aftershock activities with magnitudes M 5.4 and M 3.6.
In addition, it is also known that by taking into account the location of the epicenter and the depth of the hypocenter, the earthquake that occurred was a shallow earthquake due to the subduction activity of the Indo-Australian Plate subducting under the Eurasian Plate.
"The results of the analysis of the source mechanism show that the earthquake has a thrust fault mechanism," he said. (*)
