TRIBUNBATAM.id - Throughout September 2021, 35 earthquakes, consisting of 28 at sea and 7 on land, rocked West Java region.
Head of the Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) for the Bandung Geophysics Station, Teguh Rahayu, said that from the distribution map of the earthquake epicenter for the September 2021 period, 28 earthquakes at sea and spread to the south of Java Island were caused by the subduction of the Indo-Australian and Eurasian tectonic plates.
Meanwhile, she continued, seven earthquakes occurred on land with shallow depths as a result of local fault activity.
"Earthquakes occur with varying depths in the range of 1 to 85 km. While the largest magnitude is 4.8 and the smallest magnitude is 1.7," Rahayu said in a written statement, Saturday (10/2).
Throughout September 2021, there were three earthquakes in West Java which were felt to be quite strong. First, the earthquake on September 14, 2021 at 4.08 pm, centered at 8.11 South Latitude and 107.89 East Longitude with a depth of 16 km.
The earthquake with a magnitude of 4.4 was felt in Pamarican, Pangandaran at III MMI, and in Cikelet, Pameungpek, Parungpoteng at II MMI, and in Banjar, Cipatujah at I - II MMI.
Second, the earthquake on September 19, 2021 at 6.38 am, with a center of 7.47 south latitude and 106.78 east longitude at a depth of 42 km.
The 4.8 magnitude earthquake was felt in Cisurupan, Cikajang, Ciamis, Pangandaran, Karangnunggal, Ciherang, Pangalengan, Gardu, Cihurip at III MMI and in Bandung, at II MMI.
Taking into account the location of the epicenter and the depth of the hypocenter, the earthquake that occurred was a shallow earthquake due to subduction activity (Megathrust) in the south of Java Island, where the Indo-Australian Plate slipped under the Eurasian Plate.
Then, an earthquake with a magnitude of 3.9 centered at 8.10 South Latitude and 107.89 East Longitude at a depth of 21 km, which occurred on September 26, 2021 at 8.15 pm.
The earthquake was felt in Cisurupan, Cikajang, Darajat of II MMI, and Si Manonjaya, Salawu, Cikalong of II - III MMI.
Taking into account the location of the epicenter and the depth of the hypocenter, the earthquake that occurred was a shallow type of earthquake due to fault activity in the sea on the inner side of the Eurasian plate.
