TRIBUNBATAM.id -- The government has tightened the quarantine period for foreign travelers, at least until the end of the Christmas and New Year periods.

This was done to prevent the Omicron variant from becoming more widespread.

"The quarantine tightening of foreign travelers will continue to apply until the Christmas and New Year period is over and we will review it again at each Monday's limited meeting."

This was stated by the Minister of Tourism and Creative Economy Sandiaga Uno at the 2021 End of Year Press Conference at the Sapta Pesona Building, Ministry of Tourism and Creative Economy, Jakarta, Monday (12/27).

As of Monday, the addition of confirmed cases of Covid-19 due to transmission of the Omicron variant has reached 46 people, of whom 44 are foreign travelers.

For this reason, the level of vigilance is increased to prevent further spread of the Omicron variant.

This is because the Omicron spread rate is seven to eight times higher than the Delta variant. Nonetheless, the severity and mortality rates are known to date to be lower than the Delta variant.

In addition, the government will also continue to review tourist routes with the vaccinated travel lane (VTL) scheme, including by monitoring the development of cases of Omicron spread in countries that will cooperate with Indonesia
