Geopark Meratus Prepares Geosite Towards UNESCO Global Geopark

TRIBUNBATAM.id - The Meratus Geopark Management Agency in South Kalimantan has prepared 11 international-class geosites and 22 national geosites, in the submission of the Meratus Mountains to the UNESCO Global Geopark (UGG).
"Currently we are refining the proposal file which contains evidence that the Meratus Geopark is indeed worthy of being a UGG," said Deputy Chairman of the Meratus Geopark Management Agency, Nurul Fajar Desira, Saturday (9/24/2022).
She continued, her party prepared access to locations, information boards, directions, and area management by community groups.
Managers must also know the history of the rocks in this area.
Therefore, her party is coordinating with relevant agencies to educate the public.
The Tourism Office provides training to tourism-aware groups on geological history and area management, while the Education Office educates school children.
There is also the Department of Communication and Information who prepares promotions, the Department of Public Works and Public Housing works on physical facilities and infrastructure, the Department of Cooperatives and Small and Medium Enterprises prepares geo-products, and the Department of Forestry manages waste management in a sustainable manner.
For information, the proposal file is planned to be submitted to UNESCO in November 2022.
Furthermore, in February 2023, UNESCO plans to provide a response.
Then in May 2023, an evaluation team from UNESCO plans to visit the site.
Previously reported, the Maros-Pangkep Geopark area in South Sulawesi has officially become part of the UNESCO Global Geopark. (*)
