TRIBUNBATAM.id - Online press conferences are the main preference of media workers in seeking information other than press releases amid the Covid-19 outbreak.
The conclusion was released by the Imogen Communication Institute (ICI) from the results of research entitled "What the Media Needs during WFH" in mid-April 2020.
Research involving 115 mass media journalists in 10 Indonesian cities such as Jakarta, Surabaya, Bandung, Semarang, Palembang, Medan, Pekanbaru, Makassar, Banjarmasin, Samarinda was carried out using both quantitative and qualitative methods.
"Online press conferences are in line with government instructions in implementing Large-Scale Social Restrictions (PSBB), to break the chain of distribution of Covid-19," said Imogen Communication Institute Director, Widi Wahyu Widodo, in a written statement, Thursday (4/16/2020).
Of the total respondents, 61.4 percent chose an online press conference during work from home (WFH), because it still allows them to ask questions directly to the resource persons through the comments column or live chat.
While 28.7 percent prefer the method of receiving press releases and 9.9 percent prefer press releases in the form of video streaming.
He explained, the journalists really needed information directly from the speakers, especially when the speakers at the online press conference were experts or figures who were relevant and credible to the current situation.
"Especially if they are quite difficult to contact privately, so online press conferences can be a means for reporters to ask questions directly during the question and answer session," he said.

In the research, ICI found that the medium used for online press conferences was quite diverse, such as Youtube streaming, Live Instagram, Zoom Meeting, and Google Meet.
"But most prefer Youtube and Zoom which have live chat features. Online press conferences that have already taken place can also be watched again with the recording feature, "he said.
However, several obstacles such as unstable internet signals, and large internet quotas make 28.7 percent of journalists choose to prefer receiving press releases.
"Imagine if there are 5 online conferences a day, reporters need an internet quota that requires greater costs in the midst of a situation like this," he said.
Ideally, he added, press releases could be shared via Whatsapp messages or emails as soon as journalists entered the online room meeting.
That way, journalists can still explore other questions and angles needed.
"Press releases also help journalists if the connection is unstable, the voice of the source is unclear, missed material or other technical obstacles so they still get the right information," he said.
