TRIBUNBATAM.id - The Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysics Department (BMKG) issues high wave early warnings in a number of regions in Indonesia.
This warning is valid from 6 June 2020 at 19.00 WIB until June 8, 2020, at 19.00 WIB.
When confirmed by Kompas.com, BMKG Maritime Meteorology Management Chief Riris Adriyanto confirmed the information.
"Yes, that's right" answered Riris on Sunday (6/7/2020).
Based on official information from BMKG received by Kompas.com, Sunday (6/7/2020) afternoon, wind patterns in the northern part of Indonesia are generally from Southeast-Southwest with a speed of 3-25 knots and in the southern part of Indonesia from Southeast-Southwest with speeds of 3-25 knots.
The highest wind speeds were observed in the North Natuna Sea, the western Banda Sea, and the eastern Arafuru Sea.
The following is a list of areas that are likely to occur waves with a height of 1.25 meters to 2.5 meters:
- The eastern waters of Simeulue Island
- The eastern waters of Pagai Island
- Southern Sape Strait
- Sumba Strait
- Sawu Sea
- Ombai Strait
- Southern waters of Rotte-Kupang Island
- North Natuna Sea
- Kotabaru waters in the east
- Makassar Strait
- East Flores Sea
- Wakatobi Islands waters
- Manui waters of Kendari
- Teluk Tolo. Southern waters
- Banggai-Sula Islands
- The southern waters of Buru-Ambon-Seram Island
- East Banda Sea
- Seram Sea
- The northern waters of the Letti-Tanimbar Islands
- Fakfak waters
- Amamapere-Agats waters
- Sulawesi Sea
- The eastern waters of Bitung to the Sitaro Islands
- The waters of the Sangihe-Talaud Islands
- Maluku Sea
- North Pacific Ocean Halmahera
Meanwhile, the areas with the possibility of occurring waves with a height of 2.5-4 meters are as follows:
- The northern waters of Sabang
- West waters of Aceh
- The western waters of Simeulue Island to the Mentawai Islands
- The waters of Enggano Island-Bengkulu
- West waters of Lampung
- The western and southern Sunda Strait
- West Indian Ocean from Aceh to Bengkulu
- Southern waters of Java Island to Sumba Island
- Bali-Lombok-Alas South Strait
- South Indian Ocean Bali to NTT
- West Banda Sea
- The southern waters of the Letti-Tanimbar Islands
- The southern waters of the Kei-Aru Islands
- Arafuru Sea
As for those who have the chance to occur waves as high as 4-6 meters is the West Indian Ocean in Lampung to the south of the island of Java.
BMKG appeal
With the potential for high waves in a number of these areas, BMKG urges people to pay attention to the high risks to shipping safety as follows:
- Fishing boat (wind speed of more than 15 knots and wave height above 1.25 meters)
- Barges (wind speeds of more than 16 knots and wave height above 1.5 meters)
- Ferry (wind speed of more than 21 knots and wave height above 2.5 meters)
- Large ships such as cargo ships/cruise ships (wind speeds of more than 27 knots and wave height above 4 meters)
"Requested to people who live and move in the coastal areas around areas that have the possibility of high waves to remain vigilant," BMKG added in his official statement. (*)
