Preparation for the groundbreaking of Lion Air Maintenance, Repair and Overhaul (MRO) facilities at Hang Nadim Airport, Batam, Kepri, Wednesday (08/14/2019). 

TRIBUNBATAM.id, BATAM -  The Head of the Batam Business Entity (BP) Batam, Imam Bachroni, was optimistic that the development of the aerospace industry in Batam can be realized. 

As known, one of the dreams of the late Chairman of the Batam Authority (Otoritas Batam) who is also the President of RI-3, BJ Habibie, made Batam the center of the aerospace industry. 

If the dream being realized, Imam sure that there will be a lot of added value. Not only for Batam, but Indonesia. 

From BP Batam, now it is preparing an aerospace industrial development area in the area of Hang Nadim airport, Batam. It has already begun with Lion Air's Maintenance, Repair and Overhaul (MRO) facilities. 

"The construction of the R80 aircraft factory will also be built at Batam airport, not to mention the supporting industries," said Imam. 

For your information, BP Batam has allocated 63 hectares of land for the construction of R80 aircraft in Batam. The plane was designed by the late BJ Habibie during his lifetime.

Later, the aircraft factory will be run by Ilthabi Rekatama. A company pioneered by two Habibie's children, namely Ilham Habibie and Thariq Kemal Habibie. 

"For its development, it needs to be supported by the government, not just from BP Batam. So that Habibie's dream will come true," he said. 

It was said, even though Indonesia already had MRO facilities for aircraft, the percentage of aircraft repaired in the country was still very small, which was 30%. The rest, there are still many  who choose the aircraft repair shops from abroad.

Lion Air President Director, Edward Sirait, said that the Maintenance, Repair and Overhaul (MRO) facilities were needed for the aircraft. Well the current aircraft population right now was 700 units and it is estimated that in 2028 it will increase to 1,200 units. Every year there is aircraft growth of 6 percent in Indonesia. 

Lion Air has formed a partnership with Garuda. Through cooperation between the two of em, they will build an aircraft maintenance hangar in Batam. In this way, it is expected that there will be a reduction in foreign exchange outflows, as well as for technology transfer and so on. The ultimate goal, to make Indonesia's aviation industry go forward and have competitiveness, not only on a national but also regional scale. (wie)
