BEWARE! African Pig Fever Virus Spreads Through by the Imported Processed Meat

TRIBUNBATAM.id -  The spread of the ASF (African Swine Fever) Virus to Indonesia can be quickly if not addressed in seriously.

Because in addition to its spread through processed meat from abroad, this can also be caused by leftover food purchased from abroad and garbage produced from instant food from abroad brought into Indonesia.

Head of the Animal Quarantine and Animal Safety Center, Barantan, Agus Sunanto said the leftovers and junk produced from instant food, indeed sounds strange, but the results of the examination, the two objects that are vulnerable to bring the spread of the ASF virus. 

Even the outbreak of ASF in two countries such as Portugal and the People's Republic of China can currently have an impact on social and economic aspects in Indonesia. 

"Deaths from the ASF virus (moderate virulence) are 30-70 percent to 100 percent of the pig population itself," Agus said at the Pacific Hotel Batam, Wednesday (2/10/2019).

It could also be through the remnants of catering and leftovers of luggage that carried by passengers and cabin crew in international transports, whether by sea or the aircraft, which are processed and used as a mixture of feed (Swill Feeding).

The ASF virus can also be carried by the contaminated breeders or animal health workers such as by their shoes, clothes and others.  

Strict supervision

Agus explained in the Kepri itself, Barantan supervises the traffic of the agricultural commodities or the carrier media as well as leftovers and garbage from abroad in the ports and airports that have been setting.

For the Kepri region, there are 3 work units that supervise, namely Batam Quarantine, Tanjung Pinang Quarantine and Tanjung Balai Karimun Quarantine. 

Tanjungpinang Quarantine Head, Donni Muksidayan, said that the number of the unattended entrances or illegal routes in the Kepri reached till hundreds of ports. 

Although the joint operations with Patuh Quarantine often involve the various elements at the port, these locations are often used as locations for distribution of goods and people between the islands and even from abroad.
