Endangered Animals was Found! The New Horned Frog Species from Kalimantan Forest

TRIBUNBATAM.id -  Researchers have discovered the newest type of frog, the Kalimantan Horn Frog, or Megophrys Kalimantanensis. Apparently, this type of frog is different from the pinocchio frog species.

The Kalimantan Horn Frog was discovered during an expedition in the Meratus Mountains in South Kalimantan and East Kalimantan, also in Bario, Sarawak and the Crocker Mountains in Sabah, Malaysia.

The research team consisted of several agencies namely the Indonesian Institute of Sciences (LIPI); Kyoto University, Japan; Aichi University of Education, Japan; Bandung Institute of Technology; and Semarang State University. 

The name Kalimantanensis is the toponym of the name of the island of Borneo. The results of these studies have been published in the journal Zootaxa vol. 4679.

Reporting from the official page of LIPI, researchers in the field of LIPI's Biology Research Center, Amir Hamidy, said the morphology of the Kalimantan Horn Frog is very similar to the Pinocchio Horn Frog (Megophrys nasuta). Pinocchio horn frogs are widespread ranging from Sumatra, Kalimantan, the Malay Peninsula, and the surrounding small islands.

The first specimen of this new species was actually collected in 2008 by a senior researcher at the LIPI Biological Research Center, Irvan Sidik, but by the name of the pinocchio horn frog. 

Although it has been collected since 2008, a number of field expedition activities in the Meratus Mountains region have only been carried out again in 2019.

"On this expedition not only adult individual specimens were successfully collected, but also a collection of tadpoles and sounds produced by a male individuals," Amir said in Cibinong, Friday (10/04/2019).

Through a morphological, molecular and acoustic approach, the specimen was previously thought to be the Pinocchio Horn Frog, but turned out to be a different type and didn't yet have a scientific name. (*)
