TRIBUNBATAM.id -  The Coordinating Minister for Politics and Security (Menko Polhukam), Wiranto, was attacked by unknown people after inaugurating the new University in Pandeglang, Banten, Thursday (10/10/2019).

As a result of the incident, Wiranto suffered with two stab wounds under the stomach and that was quite deep. The treatment of stab wounds is different from other wounds because this kind of injury can cause serious complications.

Research shows the complications due to puncture wounds can be prevented if the patients immediately seek the professional treatment.

Larger or longer the objects can penetrate deeper into the skin tissue, which might cause more damage. 

The dirtier the piercing object, the more dirt and debris is dragged into the wound. Ultimately, this can increase the chance for infection.

Stab wounds must be cleaned properly and monitored during the healing process to avoid complications.

Therefore, we should immediately ask for the professional to help to get thorough the cleaning and careful follow-up. 

The faster treatment we get, the less likely we are to experience the complications.

Usually, the surgeon will make sure the wound is cleaned properly and there are no foreign objects left.

The doctor will then anesthetize the wound area, clean the inside and outside of the wound carefully, and monitor the patient's progress. 

Prevents the complications

Infection is a common complication of a stab wound that can have serious consequences.

Sometimes, minor skin infections can turn into infections of the bones or joints. Well, so that we don't experience it, we must be aware of the following signs:

• Mild skin infections can develop two to five days after injury.
• Signs of mild infection that appear around the wound include pain, redness and possible swelling. Patients can also develop a fever.

In order to avoid dangerous things, here is what we must do when suffering a stab wound:

• Seek immediate treatment.
• Get tetanus injections if needed (usually every 10 years).
• Follow the doctor's instructions.
• Keep clothes dry.
• Measure body temperature regularly.
• Watch for signs of infection (pain, redness, swelling, fever). Call a doctor if these signs appear. (*)
