Sofyan Basir was Declared Free, What is the Fate of the Riau-1 PLTU Project?

TRIBUNBATAM.id - Former Managing Director of PT PLN (Persero), Sofyan Basir, was found not guilty in a case of suspected bribery transaction assistance related to the Riau-1 PLTU construction project.

Minister of State-Owned Enterprises (BUMN), Erick Thohir said he would still study the sustainability of the project. The reason is, not only taking care of PLN, many new BUMNs that he must study as a new official. 

Previously, Sofyan was prosecuted by the Corruption Eradication Commission (KPK) prosecutor, namely 5 years in prison and a fine of Rp 200 million in 3 months imprisonment.

However, the panel of judges considered Sofyan not proven to have assisted in bribery transactions related to the Riau-1 PLTU project.  

The panel of judges was of the opinion that Sofyan was not proven to have fulfilled the assistance element to provide opportunities, facilities and information to the former Deputy Chairperson of the House of Representatives Commission VII, Eni Maulani Saragih, and businessman Johannes Budisutrisno Kotjo in getting their wishes to accelerate the process of agreeing the Riau-1 Independent Power Producer (IPP) project PLTU.

The council also argued, Sofyan was completely unaware of the plan for the distribution of fees carried out by Kotjo to Eni and other parties.

According to the assembly, efforts to accelerate the Riau-1 PLTU project were purely in accordance with the rules and part of the national electricity program plan. Sofyan is also believed to be moving without guidance from Eni. (*)
