According to studies in the journal Science, fingerprints function to improve the ability of the sense of taste.

After being investigated, the loss of fingerprints on the man was caused by the cancer treatment he was undergoing. The man uses capecitabine to cure cancer.
Capecitabine and several other cancer drugs are known to trigger the occurrence of palmoplantar erythrodysesthesia syndrome or accomplice syndrome. This syndrome can cause swelling, thickening of the skin, rashes, tingling, and a burning sensation in the hands and feet.
In severe cases, resilience can appear and the skin will peel off. These severe symptoms can damage the appearance of the skin so that the fingerprints can disappear or being difficult to detect. (*)
