Demonstration Against Omnibus Law in Batam, Students Clash with Officials

TRIBUNBATAM.id, BATAM - The Batam Student Alliance and the Batam State Polytechnic BEM had gathered at the Welcome to Batam (WTB) field, at 10.00 WIB, Thursday (8/10).

The crowd was preparing to make a long march towards the Batam City DPRD Department. 

There was a tough debate between the police and student representatives.

The reason is, the Batam City Police Chief, Restia Octane Guchy, provides an alternative, that the mass action can immediately send only a few representatives to meet the Chairman of the Batam City DPRD, Nuryanto.

This is recommended to avoid the potential for crowd creation that could lead to a new Covid-19 cluster. 

She said she considered that the situation in the midst of this pandemic was not conducive enough for the masses.

However, one of the student representatives, Ucok, still insisted that the long march should continue.  

The students persisted in their original intention to voice their aspirations to reject the 'Omnibus Law on Job Creation', through demonstrations.

Student representatives promised that the demonstration would proceed without rioting. 

The chairman of the Batam City DPRD, Nuryanto, finally arrived at the WTB field with the intention of meeting the students. 

However, a number of students were reluctant to meet at the WTB field, and tried to push their way to the Batam City DPRD department.
