Today's Earthquake: After Lake Toba, Magnitude 5.2 Shook North Maluku

TRIBUNBATAM.id - After Lake Toba, a Tectonic Earthquake also shook the North Maluku region with a magnitude of 5.5.

Based on the results of the analysis by the Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysics Department (BMKG), after the introduction of the update parameter information, this earthquake had a magnitude of 5.2. 

The incident occurred at 16.46 WIB, Saturday (27/3/2021) at the coordinates of 1.59 North Latitude and 127.14 East Longitude. 

The exact location is in the sea at a distance of 56 km northwest of Jailolo, West Halmahera Regency, North Maluku at a depth of 119 km. 

Even though the location of this earthquake was at sea, the BMKG modeling results did not show the potential for a tsunami.

Head of the BMKG Earthquake and Tsunami Center, Bambang Setiyo Prayitno MSi, in his written statement said that the results of the analysis of the source mechanism showed that the earthquake had a reverse oblique fault mechanism.

"Based on the location of the epicenter and the depth of the hypocenter, the earthquake that occurred was a medium-sized earthquake due to subduction activity between the Maluku Sea Micro Plate and the Philippine Plate," he said.

Bambang said that the tremors of the earthquake were felt in the Bitung and Tahuna areas with the MMI II-III intensity scale.

Where the tremors were felt real by some people and the light objects that were hanging swayed. 

Meanwhile, BMKG monitoring results until 17.15 WIB, Saturday (27/3/2021) haven't shown any aftershock activity yet.

However, the community was asked to avoid buildings that were cracked or damaged as a result of the earthquake. (*)
