6.1 Magnitude Earthquake Shocked Ternate, North Maluku

TRIBUNBATAM.id, TERNATE -  An earthquake with a magnitude of 6.1 shook the southwest of Ternate, North Maluku, Thursday (6/3/2021) at 17.09 WIB. 

The Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysics Department (BMKG) reported that the earthquake was located at 0.35 North Latitude, 126.22 East Longitude.  

The epicenter of the earthquake was in the sea 135 km southwest of Ternate at a depth of 10 Km.

Even though at sea, the earthquake doesn't have the potential to cause a tsunami. 

The BMKG recorded the intensity of earthquakes using the modified Mercalli intensity (MMI) scale.

The earthquake was recorded with a scale of III MMI in the Ternate region and a scale of II-III MMI in Manado.  

BNPB noted, Ternate City is an area that is in the medium to high category of potential earthquake hazard. 

InaRISK's analysis shows that as many as seven sub-districts in this city are in potential danger. The public is advised to always be aware of the potential for aftershocks. (*)
