Today's Earthquake: Magnitude 5.6 Shakes East Nusa Tenggara, No Tsunami Potential
The results of the analysis of the source mechanism showed that this earthquake had an oblique strike slip mechanism. See the detailed.
TRIBUNBATAM.id, KUPANG - An earthquake with a magnitude of 5.6 rocked the Flores Sea region, East Nusa Tenggara, Thursday (8/5/2021).
Head of BMKG Kupang Geophysics Station Margiono, said the earthquake occurred at 13.06 WITA.
"The results of preliminary information from the BMKG show that this earthquake had a magnitude of 5.6 which was subsequently updated to a magnitude of 5.5," said Margiono in Kupang, Thursday afternoon.
The epicenter of the earthquake, continued Margiono, was located at coordinates 7.73 degrees south latitude and 122.77 degrees east longitude, or precisely located at sea at a distance of 69 kilometers north of Larantuka City, East Flores Regency, NTT.

Taking into account the location of the epicenter and the depth of the hypocenter, he continued, the earthquake that occurred was a deep earthquake due to the subduction activity of the Indo-Australian plate subducting under the Eurasian plate.
He said, the results of the analysis of the source mechanism showed that this earthquake had an oblique strike slip mechanism.
Margiono said, based on estimates from the shakemap, this earthquake could potentially be felt in the Pantar, Wulanggitang, Titehena, Larantuka, and Ile Mandiri III MMI areas.
So far, there have been no reports of damage caused by the earthquake.
"The modeling results show that this earthquake has no potential for a tsunami," he said. (*)
