TRIBUNBATAM.id - Many people plan to travel at the end of the year. One area that could be an option is Sumatra and Kalimantan.
The reason is, if we are in Sumatra or Kalimantan on December 26, 2019, we are very likely to witness the rare phenomenon of the Ring Solar Eclipse (GMC).
What is a ring solar eclipse?
Ring solar eclipse occurs when the Moon is in line with the Earth and the Sun, and the Moon is at the apogee point (farthest). The disk of the moon will appear smaller than the disk of the sun, so it does not cover it completely.
The umbra cone does not reach the surface of the Earth and additional cones will form called the antumbra.
"Observers who are in the antumbra region will see the Sun looking like a 'ring' in the sky. This is what is called a ring solar eclipse (GMC)," the LAPAN press release wrote.
The Ring solar eclipse (Gerhana Matahari Cincin) aka annular solar eclipse will occur on December 26, 2019.
This phenomenon will cross 7 provinces in Indonesia, namely Aceh, North Sumatra, Riau, Kepri, West Kalimantan, North Kalimantan and East Kalimantan.
Following are the details of which cities will see the GMC
North Sumatra: Sibolga and Padang Sidempuan.
Riau: Siak, Duri, Sword Island, Bengkalis Island, Tebing Tinggi Island, and Rangsang Island.
Kepulauan Riau: Batam and Tanjung Pinang.
West Kalimantan: Singkawang.
North Kalimantan: Makulit and Tanjung Selor.
East Kalimantan: Berau.
"The City of Siak and Singkawang are two of the cities that are traversed of (GMC)," said the head of LAPAN, Thomas Djamaluddin via short message, Tuesday (10/10/2019).
In the LAPAN report, it states the greatest eclipse (GE) point or when the Moon's shadow axis is closest to the center of the Earth in the middle of the strait near Pedang Island, precisely located at coordinates (1.0089 ° North Latitude; 102.2465 ° East Longitude) , with a ring phase duration of 3 minutes 39 seconds.

Furthermore, Indonesian amateur astronomer Marufin Sudibyo said, all regions of Indonesia except those that mentioned above will witness a partial solar eclipse.
How often does GMC occur?
In general, GMC occurs every 1-2 years. The last GMC occurred on February 26, 2017. GMC in the next 6 years will occur on December 26, 2019, June 21, 2020, June 10, 2021, October 14, 2023, and October 2, 2024.
"Of all these dates, only eclipses in 2019 can be observed from Indonesian territory," LAPAN wrote. (*)
