Residents scramble to get free chickens distributed by chicken farmers in Madiun Regency, East Java. Chicken farmers distribute thousands of live chickens following the drop in live chicken prices amid the Covid-19 pandemic.

TRIBUNBATAM.id - The outbreak of Covid-19 in East Java is the reason for the drop in chicken prices, which has an impact on the income of local chicken farmers.

Head of the Livestock Service Department of East Java Province, Wemmy Niamawati said, the government is ready to buy people's chicken farmers.

"The government will facilitate the purchase of chickens from farmers affected by Covid-19. This step is expected to ease the burden of farmers from the impact of Covid-19," said Wemmy, in a written statement received by Kompas.com, Saturday (4/18/2020).

This was conveyed as follow-up information on the existence of breeders in Madiun who distributed live chickens to the community due to the drop in chicken prices from broiler breeds.

Based on the observation of the East Java Provincial Animal Husbandry Department officials, the price of chicken dropped to Rp6,000 per kilogram.

Wemmy stressed, at this time, the Livestock Service Department of East Java Province continued to coordinate with the Ministry of Agriculture and related parties to address the issue of live chicken prices in farmers.

Overcoming this, the Ministry of Agriculture and East Java Province made various breakthroughs.

One of them is by collaborating with agricultural e-commerce, such as Tanihub, and also online transportation companies to increase sales.

Excessive supply is also exacerbated by the existence of Large Scale Social Restrictions (PSBB), resulting in disruptions in distribution to Jabodetabek.

The same thing also happened in other chicken center provinces such as West Java, Banten, and Central Java.

Wemmy said, based on information from Market Information Services (PIP) officers in Madiun, the price of live chickens touched Rp 10,000 per kilogram in breeder cages.

Meanwhile, to consumers around Rp 23,000 per kilogram. This shows that traders still receive a sizable profit margin.

According to Regulation of the Minister of Trade (Permendag) No. 7 of 2020, regarding the reference price for purchases at the farm level and the reference price for sales at the consumer level, the purchase price of broiler chicken at the farmer level should be Rp. 19,000 per kilogram, while at the consumer level at Rp. 21,000 per kilogram.

He also stressed that the government will not remain silent. All efforts to save small farmers are underway. (*)
