Besides Humans, Orangutans Are Also Affected By ISPA Caused of Forest And Land Fire
The haze that has emerged in the past three months has greatly affected to the health of humans and orangutans.
TRIBUNBATAM.id - The impact of forest and land fires in a number of areas in Sumatra and Kalimantan is not only experienced by humans, but also orangutans. With almost the same DNA structure, orangutans are vulnerable of the respiratory problems.
The haze that has emerged in the past three months has greatly affected to the health of humans and orangutans.
When there is smog haze, dust particles, and carbon from combustion can enter to the respiratory tract and cause allergic reactions that can trigger infections such as bronchitis and pneumonia due to decreased the immune system.
Jamartin Sihite, Chairperson of the Borneo Orangutan Survival Foundation (BOS), said that until now there have been 37 orangutans in his foundation that affected by upper respiratory infections (ISPA). Of these amount, 31 were the young orangutans under the age of four.
"It's been around three months of exposure by the smog. If humans can wear masks, but if orangutans can't, then it's not surprising that they suddenly get sick, the DNA is almost the same, the disease was also the same as humans," said Jamartin, reported by Deutsche Welle Indonesia.
Jamartin who when contacted was in Palangkaraya, Central Kalimantan, said there was no burning land in the orangutan rehabilitation center area managed by the BOS Foundation, both in East Kalimantan and Central Kalimantan.

Regarding to the high potential for the fire hazards, Jamartin said that the company has made around 30 drilled wells in the peatland area, so it can control the fire quickly until the further assistance comes.
Orangutans Need Help
When asked what his team needed the most in dealing with the situation like now, Jamartin said that the staff in charge needed masks to wearing in their daily activities.
"In addition, we also need some vitamins for orangutans, this is also the same as vitamins for humans. Because, if an orangutan is healthy, it can be more resistant to a climate change and the influence of the surrounding environment," Jamartin to DW Indonesia.
