ORANGUTAN, The Victim of Land Fire Rescued From Ketapang Forest

Often these orangutans who have lost their homes are forced into the people's gardens to find some food. 

That's when orangutans will faced one more threat, that is conflict with humans. 

West Kalimantan Conservation Department (BKSDA) of the West Kalimantan Regional Conservation Section (SKW) 1 together with IAR Indonesia Foundation was rescued one orangutan. 

The orangutan was found in a rubber plantation owned by residents in Kuala Satong Village, Matan Hilir Utara District, Ketapang Regency, West Kalimantan, Saturday (9/21/2019). 

The orangutan, named Jerit, is male and is estimated to be 7 years old. 

Argitoe Ranting, IAR Indonesia Manager said, earlier, the Kuala Satong plantation community and the OPU patrol team from IAR found a juvenile orangutan that had long been reported by the rubber plantation owner.

"We have a good cooperation with farmers and communities in the Palung-Sungai Putri landscape area," said Argitoe, Monday, (9/23/2019)

"Because the forest around the garden has all been burnt, we have no alternative, and these orangutans must be captured and translocated to the safe forests," Argitoe added. 

The Kuala Satong area, Ketapang, which borders to the Gunung Palung National Park, was also once a forest and orangutan habitat. 

As a result of land clearing that has been converted to oil palm and forest fires, the orangutan habitat is getting smaller. 

Facing this situation, IAR Indonesia together with BKSDA fielded a rescue team to evacuate the orangutan. 

Rescue teams use stun guns to avoid unwanted things, because the orangutans are wild animals. 

When anesthetized, the condition of this young orangutan was quite alarming. In addition to being very thin and dehydrated, the rescue team also found a rotting wound that was coiled around his right leg due to a loop of rope. 

The rescue of orangutans, which took place less than a week ago, from the rescue of the previous orangutans is an evidence that a large wave of orangutan rescue is imminent. 

"We just rescued two orangutans from the land that was burned last Monday," said Argitoe. 

Director of IAR Indonesia Program, Karmele L Sanchez, said that forest fires in Kalimantan are a clear proof of the crisis regarding climate change and mass extinctions throughout the world. 

In the burning habitats, there are millions of species of animals and plants that cannot be saved. Orangutans was also be a victims of fires. (*)
