Until Saturday Night, 500 Times the Aftershocks Shook Ambon

TRIBUNBATAM.id - The Aftershocks continued to shook Ambon and the surrounding areas until Saturday (09/28/2019) night.

The Ambon Station's Climatology and Geophysics Meteorology Department (BMKG) recorded that until 20:12 WIT, the number of aftershocks that shook Ambon Island and its surroundings reached as many as 500 times.

"Till 20.12 WIT (Waktu Indonesia bagian Tengah) this evening, aftershocks have occurred 500 times," said Andi.

There was also an aftershock that occurred at 20.12 WIT with a magnitude of 3.2 magnitude.

According to Andi, of the hundreds of aftershocks, as many as 64 times their vibrations were felt on Ambon Island and its surroundings, while the rest weren't felt that.

The strength of the aftershocks varies from the greatest magnitude, 5.6 to the smallest 1.7.

Previously Andi said the aftershocks in Maluku continued to occur because there was still the energy left in the fault zone which continued to be released slowly to achieve the stability.

"So the remaining energy was released slowly so that the fracture condition can achieve the stability again, this is a normal conditions," he said.

According to Andi, although many aftershocks that occurred, the scale was relatively smaller than the main earthquake of 6.8 magnitude.

The 6.8 magnitude quake previously shook the Ambon Island and West Seram Regency on Thursday (9/26/2019) at around 08.46 WIT (East Indonesian Time). 

The location of the earthquake was at the coordinates of 3.38 South Latitude, 128.43 East Longitude or a distance of 40 km Northeast of Ambon-Maluku with a depth of 10 km. (*)
