TRIBUNBATAM.id - Every October 16, the world commemorates World Food Day. In recent years the issue of discarded food scraps is considered a moral and technical reason why hunger and malnutrition are difficult to eliminate globally.

The theme of World Food Day raised this year is "Our Actions Are Our Future. Healthy Diets for a #ZeroHunger World ", A Healthy Diet for a World without Hunger.

In 2011, the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) issued a shocking report. It is said that, one third of the food produced globally has never been eaten.

In the past 8 years, there hasn't been much noticeable improvement. Among the piles of garbage, we can see that most of it is food waste.

Meanwhile, the latest FAO data says, 820 million people suffer from hunger and more than 40 million children aged under five are overweight.

Another finding is one in three people in the world are obese and other types of malnutrition. If the situation is not changed, the number will be one of two, in 2025.

In general, the FAO emphasizes that the facts of malnutrition, whether overweight or starving, are closely related to unhealthy eating patterns. Modern humans consume less diverse, nutritious and unbalanced foods.

Speaking of unbalanced intake, other than nutritional factors, not a few people who overeat and eventually discard leftovers that are not eaten.

One Indonesian is estimated to throw 300 kilograms (kg) of food a year. We might not be sure of that number. We can debate this number. Let's just say the food that we throw away one sixth of that, for example, 50 kg per person.

Please multiply with the current population, isn't it still big?

There are many ways that we can do as an individuals to reduce food waste. It starts by emphasizing a simple lifestyle, giving thanks for food by not wasting it.

Finish every meal that we take by taking sufficient amount according to our portion. Eating sufficiently will not only have a positive impact on health, but we also don't have to throw away leftovers on the plate. Because what we throw away, it could actually be the right of those who are poor and hungry. (*)
