Covid-19 Outbreak, 490 Women Become New Widows in Batam, Couples Postpone Marriage

TRIBUNBATAM.id, BATAM -  Deteriorating economic conditions in the midst of Covid-19 outbreak allegedly became one of factors triggering the high divorce rate in Batam.

Currently the number of widows in Batam continues to increase.

Head of Public Relations of Class 1 A Religious Court of Batam City, H Barmawi, Saturday (4/25/2020) said, the number of cases handled at Religious Courts as of April 21 increased from the previous year.

He mentioned, many factors triggered the cause of divorce such as economic factors and inter-state marriages.

"From the data we have recap there are 669 divorce cases, but 490 cases have been decided," he said.

This means, he continued, there are 490 Batam residents who have just been widowed.

"The dominant divorce due to economic conditions, many husbands are no longer able to meet the needs of family and wife," he said.

Barmawi explained from that data, on the number of divorces as of January 2020 to April 21, 2020, the demand for divorce was more dominated by requests from wives or lawsuits.

There are 356 cases for divorced husbands, while 134 are sued for husband. 

Couples Postpone Marriage

The most popular news in Batam is the surge in divorce rates at Batam during Covid-19 outbreak.

On the other hand, many couples choose to delay marriage.

Based on data from Office of Religious Affairs (KUA) Sekupang in a month does not receive a marriage contract for April.

In addition to this, some prospective couples also do not want to have marriages with various rules.

Noted up to now, there has been a decrease in the volume of marriages in Sekupang District, even to the lowest level compared to the previous year.
