TRIBUNBATAM.id, BATAM - The impact of Covid-19 made port managers close the operations of four international ports in Batam.

There are no more passengers, as well as the activity seems lonely at a number of ports.

Now, only Batam Center International Ferry port operates. In fact, the number of passengers has decreased.

Public Relations of Batam City Port Authority and Port Authority Office (KSOP), when contacted Monday (14/09/2020), said that the flow of international shipping in Batam continued to decline.

"The only international shipping is Batam Center Port, sir, the others are no longer operating," he said.

He said of the five International Ferry ports in Batam, only one was operating, namely Batam Center International Ferry.

"Indeed, since there was Covid-19, passengers continued to decline, not only internationally and even domestically," he said.

In the last month of data compiled by KSOP, the number of international shipping passengers during August was only 77 people from two-country voyages.

Batam Center International Port operates, to Singapore and Malaysia. Singapore has 2 ships every day, while Malaysia has 1 ship.

For the number of passengers, he said, sometimes it only carries 2 to 10 people.

"The data is as of August, for this month it is still being recapitulated. But it is likely that it will decline further because shipping to Malaysia is closed to foreigners," he said.

Even though it is closed for foreigners, he said that there are still shipping to Malaysia.

"There are still ships operating, running once every 2 days, and even then only a few people. As for Singapore, there are 2 cruise trips," he said. (blt)
