TRIBUNBATAM.id, BATAM - The Riau Islands Central Statistics Department (BPS) noted that the number of impoverished people in Riau Islands during September 2020 increased by 142,611 people or 6.13 percent of the total population of Riau Islands.
This number increased by 10,645 people, compared to March 2020, which was 131,966 people.
Agus admitted that one of the impacts of the pandemic was a reduction in employment, this of course resulted in an increase in the unemployment rate, and as a result, the poverty rate also increased.
During the period March 2020 - September 2020, the number of impoverished people in urban areas increased from 108,859 people in March 2020 to 121,823 people in September 2020.
Meanwhile, in rural areas, the poor population has decreased, from 23,107 people in March 2020 to 20,788 in September 2020.
"The role of food commodities towards the poverty line is much greater than the role of non-food commodities, namely housing, clothing, education and health," said Agus.
Meanwhile, the contribution of the food poverty line to the poverty line in September 2020 was recorded at 66.52 percent.
This condition, according to him, is not much different from the condition in March 2020, which is 66.73 percent. (*)
