Flood conditions on Kemang Raya, Jakarta, Saturday (20/1/2021) afternoon at 16.30 WIB. 

TRIBUNBATAM.id - In the midst of flooding in Jakarta and its surroundings, people are asked to be aware of the peak rainy season until March 2021.

To note, the floods in Jakarta, Bogor, Depok, Tangerang and Bekasi (Jabodetabek) which occurred since yesterday Friday (19/2/2021) have displaced 1,380 people from their homes. 

The number is known based on data from the DKI Jakarta Regional Disaster Management Agency (BPBD) until Saturday (20/2/2021) morning. 

Head of the Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) Dwikorita Karnawati revealed that currently the Jabodetabek area is still in the peak rainy season period.

As is known, when the peak of the rainy season occurs, generally the rainfall is also likely to occur with light to heavy intensity and of a long enough duration, so that it is included in the extreme weather category. 

On the same occasion, BMKG Deputy for Meteorology, Guswanto added, the extreme weather conditions in the Jabodetabek area were caused by a number of factors, namely on February 18-19, a significant amount of air excitement from Asia was observed and resulted in an increase in rain clouds in western Indonesia.

Then the activity of atmospheric disturbances in the equator zone (Rossby equatorial) was observed, which resulted in a slowdown and a meeting of the wind from the north turning right through Jabodetabek, resulting in an increase in the intensity of the formation of rain clouds.

There is also a high level of air lability and wetness in most parts of western Java, this has led to an increase in the potential for growth of rain clouds in the Jabodetabek area. 

Also, it was observed that there were low pressure centers in northern Australia which formed a convergence pattern in most of Java Island and also contributed to increasing the potential for rain cloud growth in western Java, including Jabodetabek.

Guswanto also explained that the current rainfall in DKI Jakarta is actually still lower than the rainfall in January 2020 which also caused flooding in the Jabodetabek area.  

Therefore, people in Jabodetabek still have to anticipate and be aware of the impacts that this rainfall may cause during the peak of the rainy season. (*)
