Mount Merapi Releases Hot Clouds Avalanches as far as 1,500 Meters to The Southwest

TRIBUNBATAM.id, YOGYAKARTA - Mount Merapi is again releasing hot clouds avalanche with an estimated sliding distance of 1,500 meters to the southwest.
"There was an avalanche of hot clouds on Mount Merapi, February 25, 2021 at 16.52 WIB," said the Head of the Geological Disaster Research and Technology Development Center (BPPTKG), Hanik Humaida in a written statement, Thursday (25/2/2021).
Based on the BPPTKG, hot cloud avalanches were recorded on a seismogram with an amplitude of 37 mm, meanwhile, the duration was recorded at 115 seconds.
The column height isn't observed because the peak of Mount Merapi is covered by fog.
"The estimated distance is 1,500 meters to the southwest," he said.
Until now, the BPPTKG has set Mount Merapi in Alert status (Level III).
The current potential hazards are in the form of lava avalanches and hot clouds in the south-southwest sector covering the Kuning, Boyong, Bedog, Krasak, Bebeng, and Putih rivers with a maximum distance of 5 km.
Meanwhile, the throwing of volcanic material in the event of an explosive eruption can reach a radius of 3 km from the summit.
People shouldn't carry out any activities in potential hazard areas and be aware of the dangers of lava, especially when it rains around Mount Merapi.
Mining in the river route that starts at Mount Merapi in KRB III should be stopped.
Tourists are advised not to carry out activities in areas of potential danger and crater openings as far as 5 km from the top of Mount Merapi. (*)
