TRIBUNBATAM.id - Indonesia is ranked second as the best halal tourism destination in the world, in the Global Muslim Travel Index (GMTI) 2022 research from Mastercard and CrescentRating.

In this seventh edition, GMTI 2022 research includes 138 countries in the ranking, both countries with a majority Muslim population and minorities.

Indonesia is ranked second as the best halal or Muslim-friendly tourist destination out of 138 countries in the world, with a total score of 70.

This position is above Saudi Arabia with a score of 70, Turkey 70, and the United Arab Emirates (UAE) 66.

Meanwhile, Indonesia is one rank below Malaysia with a slightly different score, which is a difference of four points.

Meanwhile, a neighboring country, Singapore, is the only non-OIC (Organization of Islamic Cooperation) country that has made it into the top 20, at 10th to be exact.

GMTI 2022 grading criteria

For your information, the GMTI criteria are based on the "ACES CrescentRating model", which was unveiled in the 2017 GMTI report.

This ACES model includes four things, namely Access 10 percent, Communications 20 percent, Environment 30 percent, and Services 40 percent.

That is, GMTI makes a ranking based on an assessment of the ease of access to the destination, internal and external communications from the destination, the environment at the destination, and the services provided by the destination.

Since 2017, the criteria and sub-criteria of the ACES Model have evolved following the development of Muslims, including overall trends in lifestyle and travel.

This year, following the trend, the ACES aspect is added by considering the efforts of a destination to encourage sustainable tourism.

Each aspect is assessed using quantitative measurements in several criteria and sub-criteria.

Indonesia is the highest in the communication category

Of the four aspects of ACES, Indonesia is among the top 10 countries in the Communications GMTI 2022 aspect, precisely in second position.
