TRIBUNBATAM.id - Member of Commission IV of the DPR of the Republic of Indonesia, Bambang Purwanto suggested changes to the agricultural system by farmers to anticipate forest and land fires (karhutla).
These changes include changing cropping patterns, providing superior seeds, dolomite lime, and quality fertilizer.
In addition, agricultural equipment and technology, modern and integrated plantations so that good harvests are also needed.

"Thus, people can open agricultural land without having to cut down and burn trees to open land," Bambang said through his written statement in Jakarta, Wednesday (11/06/2019).
According to him, this has become a middle way to overcome the problem of forest and land fires.
Because, according to him, handling forest and land fire is not an easy problem, considering that this problem has been going on since a few years ago.
The form of guidance and assistance itself, he said, was adjusted to the authority of each ministry.

Moreover, he said, in a cultural context, there are still many rural communities, especially in Central Kalimantan who did the land clearing by burning it, and this is considered as local wisdom.
"In the perspective of indigenous peoples, clearing land by burning is very efficient and that is the only way they can do it because of limited knowledge and skills," he said. (*)
