5 Stalls Burned in Natuna, A Resident Died from being Trapped In It

TRIBUNBATAM.id - A total of five kiosks located on Jalan DKW Moh Benteng Ranai, Bunguran Timur District, Natuna Regency, Riau Islands, caught fire on Friday (7/17/2020) night.

One resident named Yuli (37) died after being trapped in a burnt-out stall. 

Head of the PB Natuna Fire Department, Sawal Saleh, said the incident began at around 20.50 West Indonesia Time.

"Allegations of initial fire due to electrical short circuit," Sawal said when contacted Saturday (07/18/2020).

Sawal said that the firefighters had difficulty extinguishing the fires because the surrounding residents who had gathered to witness the fire.

The fire immediately enlarged and burned five of the adjoining stalls. The fire spread quickly because the stall building was made of wood. 

"At least four fire trucks (Damkar), consisting of the PB Damkar Service, a Damkar car owned by the Navy, and 1 unit of Canon water owned by Natuna Police were deployed, but because of the residents who watched made our work slow," Sawal explained.

Meanwhile, Bunguran Timur Police Chief, Kompol M Sibarani said, based on the results of the case scene, the fire was thought to have originated from a short circuit in the refrigerator. 

The fire enlarged and spread to the wooden stall walls.

"We have already evacuated the victims and are still in Natuna District Hospital for a post mortem," Sibarani said by telephone on Saturday. 

Sibarani could not confirm the total loss due to the incident.

"Losses are estimated at hundreds of millions, because, in addition to five stalls, many of the contents in the stalls also burned because they had just shopped from Kalimantan," Sibarani said. (*)
