Ministry of Agriculture doing the Tightens in Pig Controls, Preventing of the ASF Virus

TRIBUNBATAM.id - The Ministry of Agriculture, through the Agriculture Quarantine Department (Barantan), continues to monitor and prevent the entry of the African swine fever (ASF) virus into Indonesia.

Based on the reports from the World Animal Health Organization or OIE, almost all countries in the Asian continent have been contaminated with the ASF virus, including Mongolia (January 2019), Vietnam (February 2019), Cambodia (March 2019) and Hong Kong (May 2019).

Then North Korea (May 2019), Laos (June 2019), Myanmar (August 2019), Philippines (August 2019) and most recently Timor Leste (September 2019).

Head of the Animal Quarantine and Animal Safety Center, Barantan, Agus said that the coordination was mainly carried out to anticipate the entry and the spreading of the ASF virus through the traffic of people and the goods, both through official ports and ports that have not been monitored, especially in the Kepri and the Malacca Strait (selat malaka). 

Barantan cooperates with all elements of the central and regional governments, even the Singapore and Malaysia quarantine authorities, to jointly prevent the spread of the ASF virus outbreak. 

Agus said, ASF virus is very dangerous for the pig farmers. Because ASF itself is caused by the virus genus Asfivirus, the family Asfaviridae which can result in morbidity and mortality in pigs to 100 percent. 

"This number is certainly very detrimental to our farmers or the breeders in Indonesia, also has the fatal consequences for the value of exports in nationally," he said. (*)
