TRIBUNBATAM.id -  Indonesian territory is an active and complex seismic region. Because in a year, thousands of earthquakes occurred in Indonesia.

Indonesian territory also has tectonic complexity, due to the large distribution of earthquake sources both originating from the megathrust subduction zone, as well as from active faults.

The sources of the megathrust subduction earthquake include the Sunda Subduction whose paths cover western Sumatra and southern Java, Bali, NTB, and NTT. In addition there are still other megathrust subduction zones such as the Banda Subduction, North Sulawesi, the Maluku Sea Plate, the Philippine Plate, and northern Papua.

In addition to the megathrust earthquake source, there are more than 295 active faults in Indonesia, including those that have not been identified till now.

The high level of seismic activity in Indonesia is evident from the results of monitoring earthquake activity in Indonesia.

BMKG noted, throughout September 2019, earthquake activity in Indonesian territory was dominated by small earthquake activity with a magnitude of less than 5.0 as much as 895 times. This number has increased when compared to the previous month, August which was only 651 times the earthquake.

Meanwhile, a significant earthquake with a magnitude of more than 5.0 in September occurred 29 times. This significant earthquake activity also increased because the previous month there were only 22 earthquakes.

So that the total tectonic earthquakes that occurred during September were 924 times. The total number of earthquakes increased dramatically when compared to August 2019 which was only 673 times.

Meanwhile, there were 155 earthquakes that were felt in September 2019. This number was also increased if compared to the previous month which was only 56 times.

BMKG Head of Mitigation and Tsunami, Daryono, said that the devastating earthquake in September 2019 occurred in twice. This is different from the devastating earthquake in August 2019 which was three times.

Until Friday (4/10/2019) at 13:00 WIB, there were 1,017 aftershocks. There were 111 earthquakes felt by the community.

"The large number of aftershock activity is actually a natural thing, because every strong earthquake is commonly followed by a series of aftershocks," Daryono said. (*)
