TRIBUNBATAM.id - World Mental Health Day is celebrated annually on October 10.

Today, Thursday (10/10/2019), the commemoration of World Mental Health Day takes place for the 27th times.

World Mental Health Day was first celebrated on October 10, 1992.

Launching from the official website of the World Federation for Mental Health (WFMH), since the first time in 1992, this memorial has become an annual WFMH agenda.

In 1992, this commemoration was initiated by the Deputy Secretary General, Richard Hunter.

Why is there a commemoration of Mental Health Day?

When it was first celebrated, there was no specific theme in the commemoration of World Mental Health Day.

The initial goal was to generally campaign for mental health advocacy and educate the public about relevant issues related to mental health or mental health.

The first three years, one of the main activities was present in a two-hour television broadcast conducted globally through the US satellite information agency system of studios in Talahassee, Florida.

In the broadcast, WFMH board members participated directly in the studio, while the participation of other countries from Australia, Chile, England, Zambia was carried out by telephone.

For Geneva, Atlanta, and Mexico, participation comes through recordings that have been taken previously.

On its first broadcast, surprisingly unexpected phone calls came from Swaziland, a small country in southern Africa.

In that country, a group of WFMH members gathered to see the event.

This makes us realize that the first broadcast of this program has reached a considerable distance.

First Theme

After 3 years of running without a theme, in 1994 on the advice of a number of parties, a special theme was created to accompany the World Mental Health Day commemoration.

So, the theme chosen at that time was "Improving the Quality of Mental Health Services on Worldwide".

At that time, as many as 27 countries responded to the campaign activity.

Over the time, World Mental Health Day was growing.

Through this warning, the federation paves the way to promote mental health and create the awareness about issues that related to mental health.

40 Seconds of Action

This year, WHO invites to contribute to mental health problems through a challenge that titled "40 Seconds of Action".

Quoted from the WHO official website, anyone can play a role and contribute to preventing the suicide cases.

Based on WHO data, suicide occurs once every 40 seconds throughout the world.
