Indonesia's Coffee Exports being Decline, What Causes it?

TRIBUNBATAM.id -  The Association of Indonesian Coffee Exporters Association or in Bahasa (Gabungan Asosiasi Eksportir Kopi Indonesia (GAEKI)) said, there was a decline in coffee exports due to an increase in domestic consumption.

"So, this domestic purchase price is higher than foreign purchases, this is actually good news for the coffee farmers," said the Head of GAEKI, Hutama Sugandhi, at the 2019 Indonesia Trade Expo, Serpong, Friday (10/18/2019)

In contrast to the previous year, in 2018 Indonesia's coffee export numbers declined due to conditions in the coffee plantations that were not good so that the number of imports also rose.

Based on GAEKI's records in 2018, Indonesia only exported 278,000 tons of coffee beans and imported 104,000 tons of coffee beans.

While for this year, until August 2019, the export figure has reached 204,000 tons of coffee beans and imports of 24,000 tons of coffee beans. 

Until 2018, exports of coffee beans from Indonesia are still dominated by traditional countries, such as the United States, Germany, Japan, Italy and Russia.

Although the export of coffee beans to non-traditional countries (emerging markets) is still low, it continues to increase.

Exports to non-traditional countries such as the Philippines, Taiwan, China, Malaysia, Thailand, Singapore and South Korea are still dominated by instant coffee, roasted coffee, extract / essence / concentrate. 

"Even though it is actually good, we don't want Indonesian coffee to disappear from foreign markets, because Indonesian coffee has its own characteristics," said Hutama. (*)
