Get to Know John Wempi Wetipo, Son of Papua, the Candidate of Deputy Minister of PUPR

TRIBUNBATAM.id - John Wempi Wetipo was just asked by President Joko Widodo (Jokowi) to assist the Minister of Public Works and Public Housing (PUPR).

"I was asked by the President to assist the task of the Minister of PUPR," said Wempi after being called by Jokowi, Thursday (10/25/2019) morning.

Wempi also explained that his specific task was to ensure the completion of infrastructure development in eastern Indonesia, including Papua.

Who is Wempi?

Citing by the KPU.go.id page, Wempi who was born on 15 September 1972 in Jayawijaya was a PDI-Perjuangan politician from Papua who served as regent of Jayawijaya Regency for two periods from 2008 to 2018. 

However, when participating in the 2018 governor election in Papua, Wempi lost to the defense of Lukas Enembe by only getting 32.5 percent of the vote.

Wempi comes from the Dani tribe, and was the only son of Abel Wetipo. He did elementary education in missionary schools before moving to Jayapura.

After completing primary and secondary education, Wempi studied for 3 years at the Manado Tourism Academy. He graduated from a bachelor's and master's program at Cenderawasih University.

Wempi began working as a civil servant in 1996 and later became the head of the tourism agency for the district.

While serving as regent, he initiated the Baliem Valley Cultural Festival, which was intended to attract the tourists to other districts that far away. 

Not only achievers in the tourism sector and regional development, Wempi also received an award from the Corruption Eradication Commission (KPK) for wealth reporting and from the Ministry of Finance for financial management in Jayawijaya, Papua. (*)
