TRIBUNBATAM.id - Indonesia explores the export market of catfish in the Middle East region, especially to Saudi Arabia.

Marketing Director of the Ministry of Maritime Affairs and Fisheries, Machmud said, Indonesia wanted to fill the market that Vietnam had abandoned because of Saudi Arabia's ban on fishery products from that country.

"Saudi Arabia usually imports quite large catfish in Vietnam. Vietnam is now banned by Saudi Arabia because of the spread of disease in the Mekong River, therefore, this is the Indonesia's opportunity to enter there," Machmud said in Jakarta, Thursday (14/11/ 2019).

According to him, during 2019, catfish that exported to Saudi Arabia only reached 265 tons.

"Next year we will also export for Hajj and Umrah. Hajj needs to reach 600 tons and 1,200 tons of Umrah. The amount is only for Indonesians," Machmud said.

According to him, Saudi Arabia exports catfish up to 30,000 tons per year. Therefore, Indonesia is optimistic that it can open up export opportunities to the country.

In addition to catfish, he will also explore the kobia fish market. Because the needs of Saudi Arabia for Kobia fish reached 5,000 tons per year, but so far Saudi Arabia has only imported 3,000 tons.
