TRIBUNBATAM.id - Towards the Christmas and New Year holidays, the Ministry of Transportation through the Director General of Civil Aviation, Polana Banguningsih Pramesti said, there was a decrease in the number of passengers using air transportation.

This is due to the fact that the price of plane tickets is expensive and the support of infrastructure is now more advanced.

"Our estimates are based on assumptions and trends, there is a decrease of 8.4 percent, this is smaller than during the Eid," said Polana in a press conference at the Karsa Building, Ministry of Transportation, Jakarta, Monday (9/12/2019).

Ministry of Transportation data shows, there has been a decline in air transportation passengers since 2018. For domestic and international flights in 2018, it dropped 10.2 percent at 5.7 million passengers compared to 2017 which was 6.4 million passengers.

While this year aircraft passengers for Christmas and New Year are projected to drop 8.4 percent to 5.2 million passengers.

Polana said, generally people would prefer to use land transportation if going home with their family rather than using air transportation

Especially now that infrastructure has begun to build that connects cities in Java.

"On the island of Java there has been a shift in transportation modes from land to air. In Java, it seems, 70 percent of trips use land transportation modes, because infrastructure is good," she said.

Polana continued, this decline did not only occur in Indonesia. Overseas, the trend of airline use has also diminished.

"There is a decline in the world. But in Indonesia there is more," she said.

Head of Transportation Research and Development Department, Sugihardjo said, the sharp decline in the aviation sector occurred because of two things, namely ticket prices and infrastructure improvements.

For seating capacity, airlines with domestic and international flight schedules on average increase seat availability by 2 percent.

In D-6 to D+5, Christmas is predicted to need 5.2 million seats, while the available capacity is 8.9 million seats. With the addition of 2 percent, the total available seat is 9.1 million seats.

To date, total tickets sold for the period 19 December 2019 to 6 January 2020 amounted to 968,000 seats or 17.58 percent of the available seats.

So far the airlines that dominate the most ticket purchases are Air Asia with 289,000 and Lion Air with 241,000. (*)
