Batam Farmers Fail to Harvest, Vegetables Prices getting Soar, Spinach Reaches till Rp 23,000 per kg

Ahead of the Christmas day of December 25, 2019, prices of a number of basic needs, especially fresh vegetables on the market, have increased.

TRIBUNBATAM.id, BATAM - Five days ahead of the Christmas day of December 25, 2019, prices of a number of basic needs, especially fresh vegetables on the market, have increased.

This is due to lack of supply from vegetable farmers.

Ahmad, a trader at Fanindo Market, revealed that the price of ssmbako, especially fresh vegetables, has continued to increase for the past three weeks.

Traders are forced to increase the price of fresh vegetables due to lack of supply from farmers and also wholesale suppliers of fresh vegetables

He added, the increase in vegetable prices was not due to Christmas and New Year

But due to the weather, farmers failed to harvest, especially from Tanjungpinang, Bintan and Batam. 

The price of vegetables has increased, namely Spinach, which was originally priced at Rp 12 thousand, has now risen to Rp 23 thousand, Mustard greens from Rp 12 thousand to Rp 18 thousand and Water spinach from Rp 10 thousand to Rp 16 thousand per kilograms. 

"The most significant increase occurred in long bean vegetables which reached Rp 32 thousand per kilogram. Whereas previously only Rp 7 thousand to Rp 10 thousand per kilogram," Ahmad said.

Irma, another trader at Fanindo Market revealed that almost all local vegetables have increased. 

She said, the increase in the price of local vegetables was due to weather in recent weeks was not supportive. 

In a separate place, Yusuf, Head of the Farmers Group, Tembesi Sayur, revealed that in the past month many of vegetables failed to be harvested. That's because of the excessive of rainy season.

"The last month the weather was not very supportive, as a result, vegetables, especially spinach, mustard greens, and kale failed to harvest because they were eaten by caterpillars," Yusuf said.
