Astronomers Find a GIANT PLANET That Should be Never Exist, Check The Details

TRIBUNBATAM.id - A giant planet called GJ 3512b was found against the theories that have existed so far.

The planet is so gigantic that it should never have existed, at least according to the planet formation theory that we know so far.

Planet GJ 3512b, that located in 284 trillion kilometers from Earth, was first discovered by the Calar Alto, Sierra Nevada and Montsec Astronomical observatories in Spain and the Las Cumbres Observatory in California.

Presented in the journal Science, the giant planet GJ 3512b orbits a type M red dwarf. 

This is the confusion of the experts. The star is relatively small, only one fifth the size of the Sun and 50 times dimmer than the Sun.

In comparison the Sun is 330,000 times heavier than Earth and 1,047 times heavier than Jupiter. However, the star GJ 3512b is only 270 times heavier than the giant planet half the size of Jupiter.

Based on the current model, planet GJ 3612b is too big for a star at this size.

"Around a star of this size there should be only planets that the size like Earth or somewhat larger like Super Earth," said the study author, Christoph Mordasini. 

The existence of GJ 3512b also shook the planet formation model in the core accretion solar system that was accepted so far and encouraged a newer disk instability model. 

To note, the core accretion theory explains that the planets occur because of the collisions and the incorporation of solid particles that eventually become large enough to collect a layer of gas wrapping.

Meanwhile, disk instability theory explains that planets form due to protoplanetary disk rupture due to gravitational instability. The fragments in the form of lumps of gas then evolve into the planets.

Lead author Juan Carlos Morales said, for the first time, we accurately characterized an outer planet of the solar system that could not be explained by the core accretion formation model.

"Planets outside the solar system prove that the gravitational instability models play a role in the formation of giant planets," he said. (*)
